I remember the first book dealing with traveling was a gift by my aunt, telling the story of a 14 years old German boy, who run away from home. He dreamed of America and meeting Buffalo Bill. The author was Count Felix von Luckner. Later called “Sea Devil”, a modern buccaneer who sailed for the Imperial German Navy. He ran the British blockades in early half of WW1 sinking tons of Allied ships and their cargo. Never taking a human life, not even the ships cat. After the war he became a ambassador of peace and understanding for the war-ridden Germany.

Well known scientists like Alexander v.Humboldt, Wilhelm v. Württemberg and Prince Pückler - Muskau are my favorites. Few people know Heinz Helfgen, who travelled from Germany in the early 1950 by bicycle around the world. His book “Ich radle um die Welt” was, at the age of 12, the story of a absolute adventure to me. Cartographers like Balduin Möllhausen and writers like Gustave Flaubert are first choice as well.
